Could it be just distractions making us stupid?

In the beginning of the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid?, the author is saying how he used to be able to read and get lost in the "narrative or the turns of the argument", but now he can't because of the internet. He brings us many good points, but to me, there are a few flaws in there as well. Granted, he never grew up with the internet and it was only thrusted upon him probably after his teenage years, so he wasn't used to all of the flashiness that comes with computers. I think it's the different generations that do things differently. For the author, he was able to read so much when he was younger and now he can't as well because of distractions. For our generation, we are able to be on the computer and still get our work done and read what we need to read. We grew up with the internet and know how it works. It's a big pool for marketing, but a great information tool as well. I'm not saying that the internet doesn't distract us, because it does, but it also depends on who is doing the reading and what it's about. Most likely if you're reading something on the internet, it's not a lengthy book that you want to read on a laptop/desktop. It's usually something informative or entertaining, but not a novel size.
It's true, we do use the internet for almost everything. If we get lost, we turn to a navigational system. We're constantly on our phones, whether it's for the internet, calls, or texting, etc. And there's just so much more. But I would say for the generation just coming into this world, it's going to be harder for them to survive without any technology at all. I'm used to technology and I do use it everyday, but it does serve as a distraction. We as a society are completely oblivious to what this technology does to us. What would take me an easy half an hour to hour on a 2-3 page paper, would take me much longer because of me flipping back and forth between Facebook and the paper. It's a shame that we live this way, but it's how we live and there's no turning back now. We're only getting more technologically savvy and bringing more into this world, so we might as well get used to this and hope we don't get too distracted.
