A photo essay?

The main theme of Envisions chapter 8 talks about designing arguments. More specifically it is about designing different types of arguments. It talks about the photo essay, the website, the multimedia model and of course academic papers.

In papers, Envisions highlights some “tools of design” for your paper. An abstract is “a professional academic genre designed both to present the research topic and to lay out the argument. (243) Basically their main function is to explain what the paper is about and to establish the argument before a reader gets 20 pages in and realizes its not what they were looking for.

Like I said before the chapter talks about visual arguments. The important part of choosing the best visual format is knowing what the most effective way of getting your message across is. One must take into consideration the “layout, design style and organization of information”

The least familiar form of visual argument to me is the photo essay. Contrary to reference photos in a normal essay, a photo essay takes the focus from the words and uses the power of the image to drive the point. The photo essay consists of a picture as the centerpiece and has supplementary paragraphs of explanation to help give context to what the reader, or in this case viewer, sees. Recent technology has given rise to the electronic photo essay. Now not only can the photos be paired with words, but also commentary by an author or reporter. This practice is common with online news media like CNN or MSNBC
