Delivering an Effective Presentation

The main topic of Chapter 9 is how to deliver an effective presentation. They give President Barack Obama as an example of a good speaker. The chapter starts by introducing the different types of oratory. The chapter then moves on to describing audience, purpose, and persona. Speakers need to be able to identify, consciously of subconsciously, all three of the above categories. They have to know the type of audience they are speaking to. Is it a friendly audience, or is it a hostile audience that doesn't agree with any and everthing the speaker is saying? This is very important. The speaker also has to know what the purpose of their speech is. Now that seems simple, but it's surprising how some speakers seem to trip over what they're actually trying to say. Identifying purpose has to be done first and foremost over everything else in prepping for your speech or presentation. Finally, a speaker has to know how they want to come across. In President Barack Obama's case, he usually radiates a sense of confident leadership as well as calmness. Throughout history, a president with these skills is well liked and does a good job. However, leadership and calmness may not fit in every situation, so the speaker has to know what skills they want to display. The chapter moves on from there, but those three points are the three best things to focus on as a speaker giving any kind of presentation.
