"I WAS ONE" 463

When I first heard about Falling Whistles I was not really sure what it was. When I went to my Family and Child Student Organization, (FCSO), they were the ones who first told me about it. They showed us an online video about what it was about. It is about this deathly war in Congo that has been going on since WWII where thousands of people are continuing to die daily, especially young boys. When they are fighting they would send young boys with whistles to the front of the fighting lines and have them blow their whistles so that the enemy could start firing. This then allows them to know where their enemy is and the boys also protect as a shield because they are then getting shot at and dying. Before the speaker would speak at Emens auditorium about falling whistles and what we can do to help those people there, he wanted at least one thousand guest to arrive before seven or he would not speak. So in order to get that many people to come they were giving out free white t-shirts that said “I WAS ONE” on the back of it and whatever number you were at getting a t-shirt. I was number 463. When seven o clock finally came around, the auditorium was packed with people waiting to see if we reached one thousand or not and sure enough, when the staff came running down the aisle, there was over one thousand people who had arrived to hear the story about what is going on in the Congo.

CH 3:Canons of Rhetoric

The canons of rhetoric are the all forms of communitive acts. They are categorized as invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Invention is the process by which we create methods for finding all available arguments. Arrangement is simply the order in which you shape your argument. We have chronological in which events are placed according to time. Cause-effect in which the cause of a probelm is given followed by the effect. Problem solution is basically a stated problem followed by an appropriate solution. Block structure is a series of examples laid out. Thematic is relationships between different works. Deffered thesis is where you substitute the thesis for a question. Style concerns choosing the proper expression for the idea of your argument. Such as titles, introductions, and conclusions. Style is your rhetorical stance. Crafting a postion paper is by definition presenting one side of an issue. Memory is accessing learned materials.Delivery is the presnetation of crafted ideas to an audience.

CH 2: logos, pathos, ethos

Rhetorical strategies are the techniques used to move and convince an audience. Ads for examoke are compact forms of arguments which help us analyze rhetorical strategies. By analyzing advertisements, we can detect the rhetorical choices writers and artists select to make theor points and convince their audiences. Narration to sell their product, comparison-contrast to get their consumer to purchase thir product rather than an opponents, illustration to show how their product can be used, cause-effect to demonstrate the benefit of using their product, definition to clarify thier products purpose or function, analogy to help make a difficult selling point or product more accessible to thier audience, process to demonstrate the way a product can be used, description to show you the specifications of a desktop system or new
SUV, classification and division to help the reader conceptualize hot the product fits into a larger scheme. To better understand rhetorical appeals we can classify them into logos, pathos, and ethos. Logos is the appeal to reason. Pathos is the appeal to emotion. Ethos si the appeal to ones character. Logical falsies are the misuse of logos in which credibility is dropped. Post hoc in which the thought that something that happened first is the definite cause of the folowing event. Slippery slope works in the same way in regards to pathos. It states that if one event happens it will always lead to another event.

Ch1: Text Analysis

Everyday we are persuaded by words whether we mean for them to ro not. It is the way that these texts aim at the audience that defines rhetoric, or as Aristotle defines it, the ability to discern the available means of persuasion in any given situation. Visual persuasion is another way where rhetoric takes effect. Such as in plitical cartoons, advertisements, or even flyers. Visual rhetoric is the persuasion through images which helps develop the life skill of visual literacy- how to read, analyze, understand, and even produce texts that are visual by nature. We need to understand argument as writing across diverse media and in turn develop multimedia literacy, or a careful way of reading, analyzing, and understanding media. Rhetoric also works in persuading people to accept the texts that you create. the most important part being your thesis statement. The concise statement of your interpretation about a chosen text.

Evaluating sources

Chapter five is finding and evaluating research sources. the beginning is finding the best research terms to use in looking for sources on your topic. By having good search terms you should be able find quality, reputable sources for specific topic. The chapter then talks about primary sources whose original texts you analyze in your research paper and secondary sources that provide commentary on your primary material or on your topic in general. it goes into evaluating sources which is something you must do when dealing with sources. when looking for website as sources look for sites that end with .org or .gov rather than .com. those sites are more reliable and trustworthy opposed to .com. when looking at web pages everything on a website is not a good source you may have to do a background search on the author or editor of the site. Also look at the date to see when it was published. these are the important things I picked up from chapter 5.

presentation delivery

In chapter nine Evisions, we learn how to deliver an effective presentation. The beginning of this chapter talks about oratory. Aristotle divided oratory into three branches based on time, purpose, and content. they also talk about how audience, purpose persona are key elements for oral rhetoric. the picture such as figure 9.2 shows me that depending on your audience is the way you have to dress. The chapter talks about including words, expressions, dress, props, and persona to the audience and the purpose of the situation. I can kind of relate to this because of interviews. I'm giving a presentation but I answer questions that represents my character. Questions such as how did the game go today? I have to answer those questions with we, and team before I answer with me and I. My audience would be NFL scouts, fans, and coaches. They read and listen about me to see what kind of person I am off the field.

Peace in Congo

Sean changed me and made me want to help. Falling Whistle founder Sean Carasso came to Emens at Ball State, and gave a speech about Falling Whistles. I was able to go with some of my friends We made sure to get there early. We left an hour before it was going to begin, and I was about to be number 35 out of the thousand of people that went. When he came out and began to talk to us, he seemed like he was just another one of my friends. He started out talking about what we are interested in and wanted to learn about us; before he told us all about his life.

He told the audience all about how Falling Whistles got started, and how he wanted peace in the Congo. He went over to give away shoes with the TOMS foundation, and just happened to find out about the war in the Congo, and how the small children were dying. The kids to young to carry guns would blow whistles and hit pots and pans to make the enemies notice and kill them. They then would act as shields of the people “on their side.”

When Sean got home he wanted everyone to know about what was going on in the Congo. She started Falling Whistles out of nothing, with the help of a few friends. You wear the whistle to show that you also want peace in Congo, and will spread the word about this to everyone. After learning all about Falling Whistles, I wanted to own my own whistle, and tell everyone about what I had just heard. I strongly encourage everyone to learn more about Falling Whistles.
