Time With Laura Ling

Laura Ling came to Ball State to talk about parts of her life. She stars out with telling everyone some of her background. Then takes ten minutes to show the audience a video. The video was about story’s she had worked on. The story’s ranged for monks, to gangs. She then talked about how she did work on the drug wars in Mexico. She began her story about when she went to china.

She went to China to research on the trafficking from North Korean to China. Story’s were told about how people were tricked into going to China. Some women would be beaten by their “husbands” and forced to have sex. Another story was about how a woman was tricked by them telling her that she could come to China to work on computers. She ended up have to be tied up and web cam to many guys.

Then she tells her sad story. She was captured by North Koreans and taken captured. They accused her of entering illegally. Laura and her assistant were sentenced 12 years of hard labor. It was a horrible time for her, from missing her family, to no knowing what was going to happen next. She was given the opportunity to read letters that her family and husband wrote. On occasion she also got to talk on the phone with her sister.

After 5 months she was rescued with her assistant to go back to LA where she lived. She now works at E! She has done a story about teens with depression. At the end of her speech who ever wanted to ask question could. Then she thanked everyone, and everyone walked out look sad from her story, but pleased that they went to listen to it.
